Letelle Sheep

THE RAMS THAT WERE EXHIBITED AT NAMPO 2014 WILL BE TAKEN DOWN TO BREDASDORP FOR THE MEGA WEEK IN SEPTEMBER 2014.

As the previous years Sires are put to the next generation of ewes (daughters of the sires) every lamb crop gets better and better.  Here are twins and triplets running together on our natural grazing.  They do get helped with lick but they do not run on cultivated lands.

Ewe and Ram

The Letelle breed of sheep one of the Best hidden secrets.   People that don’t know about the breed, have misconceptions.

Fleeces from ewes weighed from 3.8Kg to 5.00Kg

Here you can see that a good size fleece has been shorn

The sample on left is AAFF and the sample right AAplus FF

These ewes lambed before the winter, their lambs were weaned at the end of August.

Enough Fine wool to fill Bales & Bales

The sheep gave excellent wool this year and we shore far more than expected.   The condition of the sheep was good coming out under the shear.  The young Stud rams are scientifically tested yearly for depth and width of rib muscle.   Ian Walsh from New Zealand who has developed the Falkirk test has been doing it for the past three years and we can see the improvement in the carcass quality of our sheep.

This fleece is big enough to cover the table.

These twins were born in the snow and you can see that the mother has enough milk, the lambs bottoms are yellow.

Twins born in the snow

These ewes allowed me to walk through, them around them with the dogs and they are just concerned about their lambs.

These sheep speak for themselves they don’t need gimmicks, fancy marketing to sell themselves.  Buyers come back year after year.  New buyers evaluate the lambs against other breeds and book for next year.

Ewes outside the kraal where the lambs have been weaned

These ewes have just had their lambs weaned in the drought of 2004.

Come rain, sunshine, drought or snow we look after our lambs.

The word from the Wool agent is that we have received of the highest prices he can remember  for the last two to three years.  AFFH (micron 17.5) sold for R67.15.  BBFH (micron 17.1) for R66.40.  ANKS (MICRON 17.6) R62.00 We sold our wool in November 2010.  Imagine the prices we would have got this year with the sharp rise in wool prices.

One of the sires to be used in 2011

The optimal body shape.   The shoulder and neck connection is ideal, these are the sheep that keep their condition on the veld.

Hindquarters on a sire that will be used in 2011

Packing on the meat with hindquarters like this as well as the optimal body with shoulders that are correct.

May 29th 2011 this ram was shorn to-day after he was used as part of the display at NAMPO.    He shore  7 Kg’s of wool.

Here I am being shorn

Pictured below – You can see my fleece was not trimmed to give me a shape that I don’t have.

This is me stripped to the skin.   NIKS KUL JOU HIER KUL JOU DAAR NIE!

Just shorn

The fleece weight was 4.4Kg.

There will be a last exhibition of this years rams at Middelburg, Eastern Cape at GROOTFONTEIN AGRICULTURAL COLLEGE’s 100 year celebration on the 30th of June.

With the Falkirk test this year where the dept and width of muscle is measured.  One older Ram a Super Elite AA.  and Super Elite.  The result for the two tooth rams   6 Elite AA, 16 Elite A, 27 Elite, 20 High Standard and the rest Standard from 96 rams tested.  The better rams coming from our own young ewes.  So we are certainly on the right path.  The improvement is gaining momentum.

Stud ewes with the same body shape as the sires

What a win win situation.

Another Super Sire to be used in 2011

What more can one say……

Just a second I would like to add something…………I don’t do Gym and least of all steriods and check my Hams………….

I have maintained my body condition despite being used for two mating sessions this year at the grand age of seven years.******************************If you want to contact me with a question try my e-mail breipaal@zipplink.co.za  rather than using the comment column which I don’t always know if my replies get to you.
